Every bit as rewarding as the popular Khumbu Valley to the west, the Barun Valley approach to Makalu base camp is one of Nepal's many unsung treasures. The ten-day walk-in from the airstrip at Tumlingtar in the Arun Valley is as strenuous as any, and the 3500m climb to the Shipton Pass from the suspension bridge over the Arun river between Num and Sedua will have the fittest trekker's heart pounding. The views from the pass and from above base camp in the southwest spur of Makalu itself are unsurpassed anywhere in the Himalaya.
