Mustang

Mustang has often been called the forbidden kingdom. The region is only opened for a limited number of tourists per year. Lo Manthang (Mustang) is located north of the main Himalayan chain with snow capped mountains to the east and west while bordering Tibet to the north. There is a relatively wide and leveled ridge towards the north with passes not higher than 4,600 m. Falling within the Himalayan rain shadow, the climate and land is dry and arid. The historical villages of the valley rest at the altitudes between 3,300 m and 4,000 m. The region was once an important salt trading post in the trans-Himalayan belt.  While the route to Lo has been used for centuries by traders and a few scholars, only now are tourists being allowed to tread these historic paths.
